Death rates in males are more than double that of females and people who reside in rural areas have death rates higher than those who live in urban areas (Figure 2). Other costs of a DUI conviction include things like insurance rate increases, attorney fees, and DUI classes. Increases in car insurance rates were standard—47% of our survey respondents reported boosted consequences of drinking and driving rates, typically for three years. Not only that, but our survey results indicate that a DUI arrest and the proceedings that follow can lead to lost income due to a suspended license or even a lost job; almost 25% of respondents reported this kind of cost. For repeat offenders, jail is mandatory in most states and the terms are longer than a couple of days.
DUIs on Private Property That’s Open to the Public
Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, but it’s also one of the deadliest times on the road. During the 2021 Labor Day holiday weekend, 531 people died in traffic crashes — 41% of those fatalities occurred in crashes involving a drunk driver. Drunk driving is the most commonly committed criminal offense in the United States, with an estimated 300,000 people driving under the influence of alcohol every day. The negative consequences of drunk driving impact every level of our society. Furthermore, alcohol-impaired driving incurs serious, long-lasting consequences for the offending drivers themselves and every innocent person affected by their crimes.

Depending on the state, factors that can lead to enhanced DUI penalties might include having minor children in the vehicle, excessive impairment, and causing injuries or property damage. An impaired driving incident will also result in driver’s license penalties. The number of prior offenses is generally calculated based on the “lookback period.” Only convictions that occurred during the lookback period (usually five to ten years) are counted as prior offenses. However, some states have a lifetime lookback, meaning all DUI convictions, no matter how old, are counted. In 2022, New Mexico’s death rate was the highest at 42.7 per 100,000 people, which was more than six times higher than Hawaii, the state with the lowest rate at 7.1 per 100,000 people (Figure 4). Alcohol deaths have steadily climbed over the past decade, a trend that accelerated during the pandemic (Figure 1).
DUI Laws That Apply Only to Public Highways and Properties
For example, when encouraged by others, people may drink more than planned or drink when they didn’t plan to at all. Or they may drive drunk because their friends perceive them to be the least intoxicated person in the group (4). Plus, it’s important to know that any BAC can impair driving enough to cause irreparable damage. In 2019, 1,775 lives were lost in accidents where a driver’s BAC was under 0.08% (1). In the United States, more than one person per hour is killed in a drunk driving accident (1). A defence lawyer tried to convince a Manitoba judge that his client was injured in a road rage attack, not drunk, when police found his car partly on a sidewalk by the University of Winnipeg, and the man slurring and smelling of alcohol.

After the car stopped, Lindgren saw Singh, who was the only person in the car, pull the keys from the ignition and drop them on the passenger side floor. There were empty cans of beer in the back seat and one of the back windows was smashed, with glass inside the car, Lindgren testified. Provincial court Judge Herbert Lawrence Allen didn’t buy it, convicting Damanpreet Singh of driving while impaired and sentenced him to a one-year driving prohibition and a $1,500 fine. Spread the word at your school or workplace about the dangers of distracted driving. Ask your students to commit to distraction-free driving or set a company policy on distracted driving.
